- PlayStation certified best-selling console brand of all time by the Guinness Book of Records.
- Combined total sales of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 consoles amount to 450.12 million units.
- Xbox and Nintendo trail behind by a significant margin.
Amid celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the release of the original console back in 1994, PlayStation has officially secured a berth in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling home video game console brand of all time.
A certificate commemorating the achievement was handed over to Sony Interactive Entertainment head Jim Ryan during the PlayStation Awards 2019 in Tokyo earlier today.
Over 450 Million PlayStation Consoles Sold
A tweet from the official PlayStation twitter handle shared the news, revealing that combined total of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 consoles sold as of Nov. 7 of this year tallies to an incredible 450.12 million units.
Sony scoops up the record by a considerable margin. Although it’s worth noting that the figures do not include handheld devices.
Microsoft has sold 155.19 million units of its three iterations of the Xbox. Nintendo boasts 186.94 million units for the combined total sales of the NES, SNES, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo 64.
Somewhat oddly, Guinness awarded the record based on data compiled by VGChartz. The site does well to aggregate ballpark estimates of sales of both games and hardware. It isn’t what you’d call an authority, though.
The need for statistics from a third-party separate from Sony would have been a prerequisite for landing the certification.
Platinum Award For God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and More
As for the PlayStation Awards 2019, God of War, Kingdom Hearts III, Marvel’s Spider-Man, NieR: Automata, and Red Dead Redemption 2 picked up a platinum prize for shipping over one million copies in the Japan and Asia region.
Sony presented a gold award to FIFA 20 and Resident Evil 2, among others, for shipping 500,000 copies.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia also awarded the PlayStation 25th Anniversary Users’ Choice Award to a host of titles. These were Battle Arena Toshinden, Dynasty Warriors 3, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and Yakuza.
